North Jefferson Elementary School opened its doors at the beginning of the 1971-72 school year to students in grades 1-6. Carl Barr was the principal when the school opened.

Funds for the nearly $400,000 project were approved by the voters of Jefferson County on November 5, 1968. This $3.1 million bond levy also provided funding for two other elementary schools, most of the construction costs for Jefferson High School and additions to other schools in the county.

The nearly 12 acres of land on which this school was constructed was purchased from the Harry Reed Jenkins, Jr. and Millard Lee Jenkins families in 1970 for $12,000. This property was just a part of their farm. Since that time, additions 1971, 1975 (part of the $1.5 million bond levy passed by the voters of Jefferson County voters of Jefferson County on February 14, 1974) and 1990 (part of the $18 million bond levy passed by the voters of Jefferson County on February 11, 1989) have increased the size of the original structure from 27,411 square feet to 44,891 square feet.

Kindergarten was added in 1972. With the conversion of junior high schools to middle schools in 2002, North Jefferson began servicing students in grades K - 5.
